Martha Stewart made History many times before Sports Illustrated Cover

For a very long time, Martha Stewart has been writing history. The media magnate, who is 81 years old, was the magazine’s oldest cover model when she featured on the swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated 2023 on May 15. It’s the most recent success in Stewart’s incredible career, which has spanned a range of platforms from reality TV to books and publications.

On August 3, 1941, Stewart was born in New Jersey to two teachers. As a young girl, she made a few commercial appearances and began modelling. She has held a variety of positions throughout her life, including that of stockbroker, magazine publisher, and media tycoon, to mention just a few. Stewart also served five months in prison in 2004, but she has since made a full recovery. It hasn’t been all plain sailing, though. Discover more about the pioneer in the housing and hospitality sectors below.

1. She started out as a model

At Barnard College of Columbia University, Stewart initially intended to specialize in chemistry, but she subsequently changed her mind and is now majoring in architectural design. She started modelling for Chanel and other brands throughout her undergraduate years to help pay for school.

2. She’s worked a Variety of Jobs

Stewart embodies the Renaissance woman ideal. She reportedly started her career as a stockbroker in 1967 and opened a catering company in 1976. In addition to writing columns, she produced her first cookbook in 1982 and many additional recipe books throughout the years. In 1990, she created her first magazine, “Martha stewart living”, and in 1993, she launched her television program of the same name.

3. She is the first woman billionaire who made it on her own

She incorporated her business, “Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia”, in 1997, and served as CEO. Stewart became a billionaire very fast after the business went public in 1999, becoming the first self-made woman to achieve that position in America.

4. She formerly dated Anthony Hopkins, but they split after seeing “Silence of the Lambs”

Stewart wed Andrew Stewart in 1961; the couple had a daughter together they called Alexis; they separated in 1990. She never got remarried, although in 1991, she had a fleeting romance with Anthony Hopkins. She subsequently admitted that she broke up with him after watching him in “Silence of the Lambs” as Hannibal Lecter. On “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in 2022, she stated that she “couldn’t even imagine taking” him to her “big, scary house in Maine”, adding that “all I could think of, was him eating, you know…”

5. She Served Time in Jail

According to the Chicago Tribune, Stewart’s association with the pharmaceutical business ImClone led to legal issues. One of the business’s founders, Dr. Samuel Waksal, recommended his friends to sell their shares just before the company revealed one of its products had not received FDA approval – a misdemeanor for which he was ultimately found guilty. Stewart was then revealed to have sold 4,000 shares the day before the judgement was made, making a profit of almost $45,000 for her. After being charged with conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and securities fraud, she received a five-month jail sentence followed by a five-month period of home detention.

6. She and Snoop Dogg are good friends

In addition to being good friends, Stewart and Snoop Dogg have worked together for a very long period. They collaborated on a cookbook and the VH1 program “Potluck Dinner Party”, among many other projects.

When Snoop appeared on Stewart’s culinary show in 2008, they first connected. In fact, Stewart and the rapper’s appearance together on a Comedy Central roast in 2015 cemented their connection. Snoop stated to NBC in 2019: “She sat next to me and she stole the show”. She was the funniest ‘roaster’ that evening. I immediately realized that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with this woman.
